The castle is mentioned from 1020 onwards. The fortress of Montalba is interesting from the point of view of military architecture, in that it represents what a feudal castle such as Pierrepertuse would be if it had not been transformed, after Saint-Louis, into a royal fortress. Here, the polygonal enceinte has been provided with no flanking works and, in the central keep, the residential additions have left standing the great keep tower and two round towers. The outer enceinte is made up of seventeen rectilinear sections of unequal lengths. The walls have two storeys of arrow slits. Access to the lists is currently by carriage ramp and a breach made to the north-west. To the east, another path leads to a fortified gate flanked by a square belfry. A modern service chapel has been installed in part of the lord's residential buildings, to the south-east of the castle. To the left of the chapel, a circular tower of which only the base storey remains supports a ruined building of square plan. It is difficult to assess the antiquity of the square tower whose crenellated crown appears distinctly earlier than the 12th century. Against this tower, attached without bond, to the south, are the much more recent residential buildings, and to the north other structures of a military character. The round towers are furnished only with short arrow slits, with wide slit and little splay, apparently dating from the 12th century. The outer enceinte comprises more than fifty arrow slits, most of them short and contemporary with the Romanesque postern of the north front (12th century). A number of arrow slits at the upper level of the walls are longer and may date from the mid-13th century.
