La seigneurie de Payra appartenait au domaine royal. La construction du château semble se situer avant les troubles qui se sont étendus de 1562 à 1595, c'est-à-dire sous Raymond de Marion, fermier général de la Reine, bourgeois enrichi dans le commerce du pastel. Construite sur plan sensiblement carré, cette demeure n'était pas fortifiée, les défenses se réduisant à une petite tour carrée à l'est, à une échauguette près de l'angle nord-ouest et à une tour ronde isolée qui servit plus tard de pigeonnier. La base de l'échauguette correspond à un encorbellement orné de modillons et d'un cordon torsadé. La porte d'entrée qui s'ouvre sur la façade nord, à arc segmentaire, est un aménagement du 18e siècle. Elle est encadrée de pilastres nus supportant une corniche à larmier qui reprend le profil du cintre. Sur la façade est, une fenêtre au rez-de-chaussée a été aménagée dans le cadre d'une ancienne fenêtre à croisée dont le meneau et la traverse ont disparu. Une sorte de "gaine" en saillie sur le mur semble avoir eu un rôle défensif.

History
The lordship of Payra belonged to the royal domain. The construction of the château appears to date from before the troubles that extended from 1562 to 1595, that is to say under Raymond de Marion, farmer general of the Queen, a merchant enriched through the woad trade. Built on a roughly square plan, this dwelling was not fortified, the defences being reduced to a small square tower to the east, to a machicolated turret near the north-west angle and to an isolated round tower which later served as a dovecote. The base of the machicolated turret corresponds to a corbelling decorated with modillions and a twisted string course. The entrance door which opens onto the north facade, with a segmental arch, is an 18th-century arrangement. It is framed by bare pilasters supporting a cornice with a larmier that echoes the profile of the arch. On the east facade, a ground-floor window has been created within the frame of an old mullioned window whose mullion and cross-bar have disappeared. A sort of 'channel' projecting from the wall appears to have had a defensive role.
