History

The market halls were built on the site formerly occupied by the official's court and by some adjoining private houses. Their construction was decided by the provincial intendant in 1768 and the plans were drawn up by engineers Garipuy and Saget. The grain hall, which was originally to be located in the centre, was moved to the rue de Verdun. Verification and reception of the works took place in 1779. In the 19th century, the south and east wings were completed by reduction of the old enclaves and received their present metal covering. The western wing retained its original roof structure. In 1943, the East building was converted into a garage. The oldest part is that which runs along the rue de Verdun. This rectangular building corresponds to eight arcades on the rue de Verdun and four on the rue du Marché. The covering of this rectangle rests on six timber roof trusses whose tie-beams are underlined in their middle by a square pillar and two strong columns.
