The enclosure of the lower town is said to have been built between 1355 and 1359, under the counts of Armagnac. Its perimeter was 2,800 metres. Round towers stood at the angles. The construction of the bastions dates from the end of the 16th century, during the Wars of Religion. These latter gradually disappeared. Only two remain: that of Montmorency and that of the Tower Grosse, called the Calvaire. The bastion of Montmorency is of the orillon type, a device which has the disadvantage of creating fairly considerable dead angles. Like the other bastions of the city, it could have been provided with a gallery with counter-mine. The south face is adorned with a niche with pediment, the east face with two. The lateral jambs are supported by consoles decorated with channels. These jambs with small columns are very degraded, as is the frieze where only traces of scrollwork are distinguishable.
