The earliest mention of Belflou dates from 1206. In 1210, Simon de Montfort gave the strongholds of Belflou and Fendeille to the knight of Fontaines. The cadet branch of the Fontaines family retained Belflou until the end of the 16th century. In 1581, the stronghold was occupied by a Huguenot captain. The château has the particularity of having retained intact its water-filled moats which surround it with a continuous oval belt. The drawbridge was replaced by a stone bridge in the 19th century. The bridge opens onto a courtyard which was surrounded by defensive walls of which vestiges remain. The north-west corner of this enclosure was defended by a semi-circular tower, later converted into a dovecote. The château is a rectangular building, extended to the east in the 19th century by a building constructed in roughly the same style. The two corner towers are located to the south. On the north façade facing the courtyard the principal entrance of the château opens in a sort of avant-corps, altered in the 19th century. On the north-west side, a turret giving access to the terrace is abutted to the great tower. This structure rests on four circular corbels, in quarter-round, plus two base corbels, in cyma moulding. The great tower houses the stone staircase consisting of a reworked section (in iron), under a well-preserved radiating vault. An interior door, giving access to the apartments, is decorated with an ogival moulding and the coat of arms of the Fontaines.
