Dominé par les forts de Joux et du Larmont inférieur, le retranchement du Chauffaud ferme le passage nord-sud de la Cluse. Le « fortin du Larmont » fut réalisé de 1845 à 1851 puis modifié entre 1882 et 1884. Le fort Malher, de plan polygonal irrégulier, est allongé nord-sud. Le corps du fort comporte un niveau de soubassement, un rez-de-chaussée et des dessus. Le magasin à poudre et un grand abri sont creusés dans le rocher. Les casernes voûtées et les magasins sont à l'ouest et au nord. L'ensemble conserve une allure médiévale particulière.

History
Dominated by the forts of Joux and Larmont inférieur, the entrenchment of Chauffaud closes the north-south passage of the Cluse. The 'fortin du Larmont' was built from 1845 to 1851 then modified between 1882 and 1884. Fort Malher, of irregular polygonal plan, is elongated north-south. The body of the fort comprises a basement level, a ground floor and upper storeys. The powder magazine and a large shelter are cut into the rock. The barrel-vaulted barracks and magazines are to the west and north. The whole retains a particular medieval appearance.
