Military architecture developed from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Site consisting of successive fortifications, reviewed by Vauban who developed a bastion trace for the fourth and fifth fortifications. Reconstruction of the fort (fifth fortification) undertaken between 1879 and 1881 following the Séré de Rivières principle. In 1881, addition of two armoured casemates (Mougin type).
