Historique

History
A monastery was founded by Etienne who had gathered around him a nucleus of solitaries. He affiliated his community to the Cistercian order and was appointed its abbot in 1142. In the 15th century, the monks of Cadouin chose to shelter there their relic of the Holy Shroud. The abbey church dates from the third quarter of the 12th century. The abbey was mutilated during the Revolution: the church lost its western bays; the refectory to the north of the cloister was demolished as well as the buildings to the west; the galleries of the cloister disappeared. The building to the east of the church remained almost intact. It contains the former chapter house and, on the first floor, the monks' chambers (two painted ceilings of the 18th century). The north-west corner of the conventional buildings still survives. The gatehouse was arranged in premises whose walls date from the 15th century.
