History

Castle built largely in the early 17th century. Very dilapidated after the Revolution, it was restored and enlarged from 1858 under the direction of Jules de la Morandière. Vestiges of fortifications are still visible in the trace of the moats and the arrangement of four round and square turrets, which formed the four angles of a pre-existing fortified castle. The main quadrangular body is flanked laterally by two wings cantoned on the north by square turrets. On the south, the staircase cage flanks the main body. Also visible are the two circular turrets. On the north, two square pavilions overhang the terrace, and have retained traces of fortifications. The low lateral wings were intended for domestic and agricultural uses. Inside, the castle preserves a library with painted decoration by Chenu and Ulysse Besnard. The wooden torcheres adorning the handrail and representing the four seasons were executed by the cabinet-maker Biberon. The main body preserves three stone chimneys of the 17th century, repainted in the 19th by the same artists. Only the chimney of a bedroom on the first floor has retained its original paintings on the straight hood.
