En 924, les moines de Saint-Laumer, poussés jusqu'à Blois par les invasions normandes, se voient octroyer un terrain hors des murs de la ville. Au 14e siècle, les remparts sont dressés pour abriter contre les Anglais les constructions monacales des 12e et 13e siècles. L'abbaye est ruinée au moment des guerres de Religion. Les Bénédictins réformés de la congrégation de Saint-Maur reconstruisent l'abbatiale. Sont également restaurés les bâtiments abritant le chapitre, le réfectoire, la cuisine et le dortoir. Dans la seconde moitié du 17e siècle, l'acquisition de terrains permet la construction de nouveaux bâtiments. Après la Révolution, les bâtiments abbatiaux furent affectés à l'Hôtel-Dieu, avec adjonction de bâtiments nouveaux en 1845-1847, réalisés par l'architecte Pinault puis Jules de la Morandière. L'Hôtel Dieu a été récemment reconverti en bureaux pour la Direction Départementale de l'Equipement.

History
In 924, the monks of Saint-Laumer, driven to Blois by Norman invasions, were granted land outside the walls of the city. In the 14th century, the ramparts were erected to shelter against the English the monastic buildings of the 12th and 13th centuries. The abbey was ruined at the time of the Wars of Religion.
