History

The castle has its origins in 1066, in a donation to the abbey of Preuilly. The edifice comprises a large main dwelling, entirely remade in the 19th century, perhaps except for the foundations. Upstream there remains, from the old fortified castle, an ensemble much reworked in the 17th century. This building is flanked, on the river side, by two towers and a small central circular body with rib vault. The main tower, former keep, has retained on the top floor a square room in timber framing. Around this room, a rampart walk follows the circular form and rests upon the projection of the machicolations which form a corbelled overhanging on corbels with triple moulded projection. Inside, three rooms retain fireplaces from the 15th century, the probable date of construction, perhaps built over more ancient foundations. A small turret terminates the old dwelling.
