Depuis 1397, la maison commune d'Albi se trouvait dans la carrière de la Sabaterie. Elle fut transférée dans l'hôtel de messire Etienne de Martin en 1728, son emplacement actuel. L'hôtel existait avant sa transformation en maison commune, comme l'atteste la date de 1682 gravée au fronton de la porte d'escalier. Les aménagements nouveaux furent toutefois importants, rendant difficilement lisibles les dispositions primitives. Le portail d'entrée en plein cintre, ouvert dans la partie orientale d'une longue façade en ligne brisée, est accosté de pilastres et présente des bossages à trémie dans encadrement champlevé. Cette partie a été très restaurée et la plupart des bossages refaits. Au-dessus, des consoles à guirlandes supportent l'entablement surmonté par un tableau portant les armoiries de la ville. Surmonté par un petit fronton en segment de cercle et une boule, ce tableau est relié par des ailerons chargés de guirlandes, à deux boules latérales. Le couloir accède à la cour sous un arc en briques, surmonté par un bandeau de pierre soutenu par trois consoles. Sur les façades sur cour, la porte d'entrée de l'escalier, en plein cintre, présente un encadrement intérieur mouluré et coupé par la clef en console. Il est accosté de pilastres nus à chapiteaux ioniques. Au-dessus d'une frise bombée, un fronton circulaire rompu encadre un cartouche, délimité par des volutes. Reposant sur les rampants du fronton, sont sculptés deux personnages ailés tenant des rameaux de feuillages enlacés ainsi que des cornes d'abondance remplies de fruits. Le premier étage est percé d'une fenêtre à meneaux, à encadrement en briques, de même que les pilastres. Les meneaux portent des sculptures.

History
Since 1397, the common house of Albi was located in the Sabaterie quarry. It was transferred to the mansion of monsieur Etienne de Martin in 1728, its present location. The mansion existed before its transformation into a common house, as attested by the date 1682 engraved on the pediment of the staircase door. The new arrangements were nevertheless substantial, making the primitive dispositions difficult to read. The round-arch entrance portal, opened in the eastern part of a long broken-line façade, is flanked by pilasters and presents rustication with a hopper in chamfered surround. Topped by a small segmental pediment and a ball, this panel is linked by winged elements laden with garlands to two lateral balls. The corridor accesses the courtyard under a brick arch, surmounted by a stone band supported by three brackets. On the courtyard façades, the entrance door of the staircase, with round arch, presents a moulded interior surround cut by the keystoned vault. It is flanked by plain pilasters with Ionic capitals. Above a bulged frieze, a broken circular pediment frames a cartouche, delimited by scrolls. Resting on the ramps of the pediment, two winged figures are sculpted holding sprays of interlaced foliage as well as cornucopias filled with fruit. The first floor is pierced by a mullioned window, with brick surround, as do the pilasters. The mullions bear sculptures.
