History

Carried out between 1834 and 1840 by Urbain Maguès, the repair yards were suppliers for the navigation of the Canal du Midi. Originally situated on the banks of port Saint-Etienne, then at port Saint-Sauveur where they disrupted traffic, they were planned for two builders. They are organised around a central basin, or water station, linked to the canal by a passage surmounted by a travelling crane. On either side of this basin are the "forms". Floating caissons with beams allowed water to be let in, replaced by barge-gates. Of the four forms constructed, three remain. The form situated to the south was re-dredged in the 20th century. In 1841, the decision was made to construct a large open-sided shed to cover a form and allow work in all weathers. This shed, with a roof structure with curved arbalest, in the manner of Philibert Delorme, covered in mechanical tiles, appears to have been originally covered in zinc. The vast covered basin, intended for the stationing of boats, was built in the second half of the 19th century against the enclosure wall bordering the canal. It was later transformed into a dry dock. The dwellings of the two masters, the workshops and the stores are arranged on either side of the gateway on the edge of allée des Demoiselles.
