Historique
L'ancien collège de Jésuites, construit au 17e siècle sur les plans du père Martellange par l'architecte Jean Harel, se compose d'un pavillon, orné au centre d'une haute lucarne monumentale et flanqué de deux petites tourelles carrées se rattachant, en retour d'équerre, à deux longues ailes. A chaque extrémité occidentale de celles-ci s'ouvre sur la rue de Paris, une porte monumentale encadrée de quatre pilastres doriques et surmontée d'un entablement. L'aile sud abrite la cour d'assises, l'aile nord la bibliothèque des avocats et le tribunal de première instance dont le plafond est orné de l'Assomption de la Vierge. Le bâtiment central abrite le greffe, l'instruction et les divers services du palais. Le jeu de couleurs des façades est obtenu par l'emploi de la brique noire et rouge, alliée au grès. Avec des réminiscences de la Renaissance française, l'édifice constitue un des plus beaux ensembles de l'architecture Louis XIII, particulièrement caractéristique du style bourbonnais de l'époque.

History
The former Jesuit college, built in the 17th century on the plans of Father Martellange by architect Jean Harel, consists of a pavilion, decorated at the centre with a high monumental dormer and flanked by two small square turrets attached, at right angles, to two long wings. At each western extremity of these opens onto rue de Paris a monumental door framed by four Doric pilasters and surmounted by an entablature. The south wing houses the assize court, the north wing the lawyers' library and the court of first instance whose ceiling is decorated with the Assumption of the Virgin. The central building houses the clerk's office, the investigation office and various offices of the courthouse. The colour scheme of the façades is obtained by the use of black and red brick, allied to sandstone. With reminiscences of the French Renaissance, the building constitutes one of the finest ensembles of Louis XIII architecture, particularly characteristic of the Bourbonnais style of the period.
