Le château est construit sur une colline escarpée, sur une plateforme autrefois entourée de murailles dont il ne reste plus qu'une faible portion. La masse principale du château est constituée par le donjon rectangulaire, et par un bâtiment oblong transformé en habitation. L'enceinte subsiste par une courtine et deux tours ruinées, paraissant dater du 14e ou 15e siècle. La poterne d'entrée se présente comme une tour rectangulaire percée d'une porte en plein cintre avec archivolte décorée de motifs floraux. Cette poterne est un des rares exemples d'architecture militaire de la fin du 12e ou du début du 13e siècle. Cet édifice était l'ancien siège d'une des châtellenies les plus prospères du Bourbonnais.

History
The castle is built on a steep hill, on a platform formerly surrounded by walls of which only a small portion remains. The main mass of the castle is constituted by the rectangular keep, and by an oblong building transformed into a dwelling. The enclosure survives by a curtain wall and two ruined towers, appearing to date from the 14th or 15th century. The entrance postern is presented as a rectangular tower pierced by a round arch door with archivolt decorated with floral motifs. This postern is one of the rare examples of military architecture of the late 12th or early 13th century. This building was the former seat of one of the most prosperous castellanies in Bourbonnais.
