In 1446, Jean de Bourbon, bishop of Le Puy, founded the collegiate church of Retournac, but the church existed well previously (end of the 12th century). The primitive plan of the building comprises a nave of three bays and a wide chevet on which two small chevets open laterally. The vessel exerted considerable thrust on its jambs which deformed them. The transverse arches rest on half-columns terminated by capitals with foliage. The third bay bears a large dome supported in an intermediate manner between squinches and pendentives. The arches supporting the dome are doubled. Round-arch relieving arches along the walls. The chevet is lower and narrower than the nave. The triumphal arch rests on columns with flat surface and torus. Two radiating small chevets, without ambulatory, open onto the chevet. The bay preceding the chevet has two windows with colonnettes and archivolts on each face. Several chapels were opened subsequently (17th and 18th centuries). The bay preceding the chevet bears the large square bell tower, with at the summit, putlog holes intended to support the lath to a defensive purpose.
