History

This monument constitutes an interesting type of rural church of the 12th century in the Velay. The priory of Lavoûte was given to the abbey of Tournus before 1120. From the 12th century are datable the nave, part of the transept, the crossing surmounted by the bell tower on cupola, some masonry of the choir. The edifice terminates in a chevet with a square east end pierced by a window whose lattice belongs to the 15th century. It seems probable that the apse having had to be ruined around this period, the church was closed to the east by a wall. The primitive entrance door, now walled up, was to the north. Addition of chapels opening onto the transept in the 19th century. Complete refection of the façade, with a stair turret and construction of a sacristy.
