Lors de la création du département en 1790, fut cherché un lieu d'accueil pour les séances départementales. Après avoir occupé les salles du collège, les bâtiments de l'ancien couvent des Cordeliers furent acquis à cet effet. Des travaux furent entrepris de 1791 à 1793 pour aménager les locaux à leurs nouvelles fonctions. Ils furent évacués en 1797. En 1848, l'état des lieux exigeait d'importantes transformations dont le projet fut confié à l'architecte Mallay (réfection des toitures, galeries du cloître et voûtes des archves ; construction d'avant-corps dans la cour ; restauration des appartements d'honneur ; création du grand escalier et de la façade à colonnade). £Les locaux devenant trop petits, la construction d'un nouveau bâtiment est envisagée en 1910, et le projet de l'architecte François Clermont retenu. L'édifice de style néo-classique est inauguré le 7 juillet 1923 par le Président Millerand. Décor sculpté par Paul Graf. L'ancienne salle du conseil général renferme un ensemble décoratif complet où stucs, vitraux et luminaires sont traités dans un style néo-Renaissance. La salle a conservé l'intégralité de son mobilier d'origine.

History
When the department was created in 1790, a location was sought to accommodate the departmental sessions. After occupying the halls of the college, the buildings of the former convent of the Cordeliers were acquired for this purpose. The former general council room contains a complete decorative ensemble where stucco, stained glass and light fittings are treated in a neo-Renaissance style.
