La forteresse se composait d'une première enceinte délimitant la basse-cour du château proprement dit, flanqué de tours dont certaines ont entièrement disparu. Cette première enceinte conserve sa poterne et l'ancien corps de garde. L'enceinte intérieure date des 12e et 13e siècles. Le sommet de la tour de guet a été transformé au 15e -16e siècle. L'enceinte extérieure ainsi que le portail d'entrée sont du 14e siècle.

History
This fortress presents one of the most remarkable examples of medieval architecture in Lower Auvergne. The fortress consisted of a first enclosure delimiting the outer bailey of the castle proper, flanked by towers some of which have entirely disappeared. This first enclosure preserves its postern and the former guardhouse. The inner enclosure dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. The top of the watchtower was transformed in the 15th-16th century. The outer enclosure as well as the entrance gateway are from the 14th century.
