Historique
Fondé en 1558 par l'évêque de Clermont, Guillaume Duprat. Premier collège de Jésuites construit en France après la fondation de celui dit de Clermont à Paris. Edifié de 1558 à 1564, l'édifice correspond au premier type des collèges jésuites. Les bâtiments sont organisés en quadrilatère autour de cours fermées, et abritaient la salle de classe, la salle de théâtre, la chapelle, et les habitations avec cuisine, réfectoire, apothicairerie, jardin, ainsi que l'église et la sacristie. Avec la soumission de la ville à Henri IV, en 1594, les Jésuites sont bannis. Ils y reviennent en 1604. Des travaux de rénovation sont entrepris après 1621 et en 1750. Les Jésuites furent de nouveau chassés en 1762 et le collège remis au diocèse jusqu'à sa fermeture à la Révolution. History
Founded in 1558 by the bishop of Clermont, Guillaume Duprat. First Jesuit college built in France after the foundation of the one known as Clermont college in Paris. Built from 1558 to 1564, the building corresponds to the first type of Jesuit colleges. The buildings are organized in a quadrangle around closed courtyards, and housed the classroom, theatre hall, chapel, and living quarters with kitchen, refectory, apothecary, garden, as well as the church and sacristy. With the submission of the city to Henri IV in 1594, the Jesuits were banished. They returned in 1604. Renovation works were undertaken after 1621 and in 1750. The Jesuits were again expelled in 1762 and the college returned to the diocese until its closure at the Revolution. The buildings experienced various uses before becoming a state college in 1963.
