Le château de Chalus est l'un des principaux témoignages des fortifications auvergnates, conservant de très rares témoignages d'aménagements intérieurs civils d'époque : cheminée du donjon, ordonnance de la salle polygonale du corps de logis central et peintures murales du logis sud.£Le château occupait autrefois l'ensemble d'une butte commandant la vallée de l'Allier et le bassin du Lembron. Il fut divisé en deux et ne reste aujourd'hui, comme témoin homogène de l'époque médiévale, que la partie antérieure qui défendait l'accès à l'éperon. Ces vestiges sont dominés par un donjon cylindrique construit vers 1300, sur lequel différents corps de logis se sont greffés au 14e et au 15e siècle. A l'intérieur, chaque étage comporte une salle voûtée en coupole. Deux corps de logis s'articulent au pied du donjon. Le corps de logis au sud présente une salle polygonale, dite salle du conseil, dont chaque pan est garni d'un arc de décharge brisé reçu sur colonnettes engagées par l'intermédiaire de chapiteaux. Au rez-de-chaussée de la tour semi-circulaire qui flanque l'angle sud-est du corps de logis, une pièce voûtée conserve les restes d'un décor peint du 15e siècle, comprenant un faux-appareil et un écu porté par deux anges.

History
The château de Chalus is one of the principal testimonies of Auvergnat fortifications, preserving very rare testimonies of civil interior arrangements of the period: fireplace of the keep, arrangement of the polygonal hall of the central main dwelling and wall paintings of the south dwelling. The château formerly occupied the whole of a mound commanding the valley of the Allier and the basin of the Lembron. It was divided in two and there remains today, as a homogeneous witness of the medieval period, only the anterior part which defended access to the spur. These vestiges are dominated by a cylindrical keep constructed around 1300, to which various main dwellings were attached in the 14th and 15th centuries. Inside, each storey comprises a hall vaulted with a dome. Two main dwellings articulate at the foot of the keep. The main dwelling to the south presents a polygonal hall, called the council hall, of which each face is furnished with a pointed relieving arch received on engaged columns by means of capitals. On the ground floor of the semicircular tower which flanks the south-east angle of the main dwelling, a vaulted room preserves the remains of painted decoration of the 15th century, comprising a false ashlar and a shield borne by two angels.
