La Tour aux figures, résultat d'une commande publique du Centre National des Arts Plastiques en 1983, est une "peinture monumentée", érigée dans le parc départemental de l'île Saint-Germain de 1985 à 1988. L'architecte Antoine Butor a élaboré les plans d'une ossature en béton armé, haute de 24 mètres, recouverte d'une "peau" en stratifié de verre époxy revêtue de peintures polyuréthanes, réalisées d'après le dessin de Jean Dubuffet. Celui-ci est mort en mai 1985 au début de la construction. L'année 1985 correspond au choix de l’emplacement et au début des études de construction. Les années suivantes, 1986-1988 sont consacrées à la construction. À partir de 1993 il a été possible de visiter l’intérieur de l’édifice où l’artiste avait conçu un labyrinthe ascensionnel intitulé « le Gastrovolve ». La Tour aux figures, result of a public commission from the Centre National des Arts Plastiques in 1983, is a "monumented painting", erected in the departmental park of île Saint-Germain from 1985 to 1988. Architect Antoine Butor elaborated the plans for a reinforced concrete frame, 24 metres high, covered with a "skin" of epoxy glass stratified and coated with polyurethane paints, executed after a drawing by Jean Dubuffet. The following years, 1986-1988 were devoted to construction. From 1993 it was possible to visit the interior of the building where the artist had conceived an ascending labyrinth entitled « le Gastrovolve ».
