Témoin de la vie parisienne durant les "années folles", la brasserie La Coupole est construite en 1927 par les architectes Barillet et Le Bouc pour les restaurateurs Ernest Fraux et René Lafon. Le nom est choisi par référence à ceux des établissements avoisinants, "Le Dôme" et "La Rotonde". Le programme d'origine comportait un dancing en sous-sol, une brasserie au rez-de-chaussée et un restaurant d'été à l'étage (recouvert en 1931 d'une coupole en dalles de verre). A l'initiative du décorateur Solvet, trente-deux artistes de Montparnasse participent à la décoration de la salle du restaurant, notamment par des peintures sur toile marouflée en haut des piliers. Fernand Léger figure parmi ces peintres, mais l'attribution des toiles est incertaine. Le restaurant a été réhabilité en 1988 à l'occasion de la surélévation du bâtiment. History
A witness to Parisian life during the "roaring twenties", the brasserie La Coupole was built in 1927 by the architects Barillet and Le Bouc for the restaurateurs Ernest Fraux and René Lafon. The name was chosen by reference to those of neighbouring establishments, "Le Dôme" and "La Rotonde". The original programme comprised a dancing hall in the basement, a brasserie on the ground floor and a summer restaurant on the first floor (covered in 1931 by a cupola of glass slabs). At the initiative of the decorator Solvet, thirty-two artists from Montparnasse participated in the decoration of the restaurant hall, notably through paintings on canvas glued to the top of the pillars. Fernand Léger was among these painters, but the attribution of the canvases is uncertain. The restaurant was rehabilitated in 1988 on the occasion of the raising of the building. Six levels of offices, behind a façade intended to recall the architecture of the 1930s, today dominate the establishment on the ground floor.
