Camp built by the Germans from May 1941; wooden barracks were planned for 4000 detainees. The camp's command post was established in a small winter sports hotel. A total of 17,405 prisoners are said to have stayed or passed through this camp. Liberated on 22 November 1944, the camp was used until 1949 by the French penitentiary administration. The remains of the camp, including the barn housing the gas chamber, are protected at the instigation of Bertrand Monnet, chief architect of historic monuments and author, in 1960, of the camp memorial (sculpture by Lucien Fenaux). Barrack number 1, rebuilt after an attack in 1976, today houses a museum which groups together various objects collected in the camp and traces the history of National Socialism.
