Ce sanctuaire est l'un des plus anciens de Saint-Jean-le-Vieux. Il était une halte importante du pèlerinage de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. History
This sanctuary is one of the oldest in Saint-Jean-le-Vieux. It was an important stopping place on the pilgrimage of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. The pilgrims crossed the river there by ford or joined Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port by the Madeleine. In 1243, Pierre Sanche d'Urrutia made a donation of the chapel to the abbey of Roncevaux. Four walls pierced with loopholes determine a rectangle. The Romanesque portal remained almost intact. It is surmounted by a torus resting on two small conical consoles in red stone from Arradoy. From the portal, a staircase descends towards the lower level. The upper part of the building may have been remodelled for defensive purposes.
