Historique

History
Former cathedral, Sainte-Marie was the seat of the bishopric until the Revolution. Portal and Romanesque porch. The church is composed of a large central nave, two aisles, two rows of lateral chapels, a sanctuary and a crown of five radiating chapels. Naves from the 12th and 13th centuries. The ambulatory and the crown of chapels of the chevet belong to the beginning of the 14th century. The lateral chapels date from the 15th century. Examination of the building suggests that the primitive plan presented the form of a Greek cross and that behind the triumphal arch came to rest directly a circular apse on the foundations of which were raised, in the 14th century, the pillars of the sanctuary. The building is covered with masonry vaults divided by doubleaux arches and ribs. The entrance portal is a remnant of the primitive construction and should belong to the 11th century. The portal has a wide splaying and its deep round-arch voussure rests on stepped jambs decorated with detached columns. The door is geminate. The tympanum is supported by two round arches resting on a column in front of which are attached two figures of chained prisoners forming caryatids. The voussure is decorated with pearls, foliage and figures (months of the year, 24 elders of the Apocalypse). On the tympanum, a descent from the cross in bas-relief. On each side of the portal, outside the tympanum, two soldiers in the round observe the scene. Adjacent to the church is a vaulted sacristy with the beginning of a gallery from the 14th century, remnants of more substantial constructions linking the church to the bishopric.
