Historique
Le fort, ébauché au cours du 17e siècle, fut complètement remodelé par Vauban et son collaborateur, François Ferry, à partir de 1693. La tour a été bâtie sur les ruines de celle construite sous Henri IV. Des remparts ont été ajoutés et des améliorations apportées en 1723 par l'établissement d'une petite caserne et en 1726 par le creusement d'une citerne. L'édifice, progressivement complété et modernisé jusqu'en 1861, fut déclassé en 1891. Sa partie Est a été mutilée par l'occupation allemande et les travaux de reconstruction. La Socoa est une batterie de cote fermée, l'enceinte n'est pas flanquée, la grosse tour centrale à quatre étages est couronnée par une plateforme à mâchicoulis sur laquelle peuvent prendre place un ou deux canons.

History
The fort, sketched during the 17th century, was completely remodelled by Vauban and his collaborator, François Ferry, from 1693 onwards. The tower was built on the ruins of that constructed under Henri IV. Ramparts were added and improvements made in 1723 by the establishment of a small barracks and in 1726 by the sinking of a cistern. The building, progressively completed and modernized until 1861, was declassified in 1891. Its eastern part was mutilated by German occupation and reconstruction works. The Socoa is a closed coastal battery, the enclosure is not flanked, the large central tower with four storeys is crowned by a platform with machicolations on which one or two cannons could be placed.
