History
For a long time, the petit Bayonne was summarily protected by simple earthwork entrenchments furnished with palisades and punctuated by a few masonry works. Around the early 16th century, the military role of Bayonne changed and the transformations of the fortifications were numerous until Vauban. The petit Bayonne is defended to the south-east by a line of fortifications established in the 17th century. On the edge of the Adour is found the fortified complex of the Mousserolles gate. At the eastern angle of the triangle formed by the Nive and the Adour and the fortifications closing it, a bastion tower was built protected by a detached bastion or counter-guard in V-shape.
