Le Château Vieux, édifice carré, fut bâti à l'angle intérieur nord de l'enceinte romaine, qui date du 2e siècle. Trois des tours romaines furent renforcées par des murs de placage. En 1619, Antoine de Gramont, gouverneur de Bayonne, renforça le château du côté de la ville par un ouvrage quadrilatère. A l'ouest du château fut construite une barbacane qui devint un boulevard en 1600, puis un bastion précédé d'une contregarde en 1680. Cette contregarde reçut un corps de garde à l'intérieur, en 1681-1683, et fut revêtue à la gorge. La porte de Tarride (Lachepaillet) date de 1450.

History
The Château Vieux, a square building, was built at the inner north corner of the Roman fortification, which dates from the 2nd century. Three of the Roman towers were reinforced by facing walls. In 1619, Antoine de Gramont, governor of Bayonne, reinforced the castle on the town side by a quadrilateral work. To the west of the castle was built a barbican which became a boulevard in 1600, then a bastion preceded by an outwork in 1680. This outwork received a guard room inside, in 1681-1683, and was cased at the gorge. The Tarride Gate (Lachepaillet) dates from 1450.
