History

The family of Arcangues has owned the castle since the 12th century. The present building was constructed in 1900 on the site of a 17th-century building whose general plan it reproduces. This is the third rebuilding, the first castle having been burned in 1636 by the Spanish at the time of the Thirty Years' War. In 1813, the castle is occupied by Wellington. Two lateral pavilions frame a central block with two storeys slightly set back. The upper openings present decoration with a semi-circular pediment. On the south side, a round tower with an octagonal roof was rebuilt on the site of the tower of the old castle. The roof rests on large carved wooden corbels, following the model of Spanish Basque houses. Inside, a large hall occupies the entire space around which are distributed the different rooms of function. The great salon is decorated with white and gold panelling in which are set fragments of Flemish tapestries. The ceiling presents a highly ornate cornice. The room called "Spanish" is covered with a ceiling of beams and lozenged caissons painted in blue and red. The great salon and the dining room are an excellent testimony to the taste of the 1900s in the arrangement of a great mansion intended for receptions and where the reception rooms were the subject of particular care.
