Au 19e siècle, l'ingénieur Panay dota la ville d'un ensemble néo-classique comprenant plusieurs bâtiments. La prison, qui fait partie de cet ensemble architectural, fut bâtie, pour sa partie est, par Panay (1807-1809) , et pour sa partie ouest par Arthaud (1820-1823). La partie Est est occupée par le pavillon d'entrée. La façade est renforcée aux angles par de massives chaînes d'angle harpées en fort bossage et ponctuée, au sommet, d'une corniche très débordante. Au rez-de-chaussée, de part et d'autre de deux fenêtres grillagées, une baie à arc segmentaire composé de claveaux en fort bossage, donne accès à l'épaisse porte en bois encadrée par deux gros anneaux de fer. Deux sommiers et une clef coiffent le sommet de la porte. L'aspect général de la partie ouest est très sobre : au rez-de-chaussée, trois baies aveugles à sommet cintré présentent un bandeau horizontal au niveau des impostes. Une corniche sépare le rez-de-chaussée du premier étage, percé de trois fenêtres rectangulaires.

History
In the 19th century, the engineer Panay equipped the town with a neo-classical complex comprising several buildings. The prison, which forms part of this architectural complex, was built, for its eastern part, by Panay (1807-1809), and for its western part by Arthaud (1820-1823). The eastern part is occupied by the entrance pavilion. The façade is reinforced at the angles by massive harpéd corner chains in bold bossage and punctuated, at the top, by a very overhanging cornice. On the ground floor, on either side of two barred windows, an opening with a segmental arch composed of ashlar stones in bold bossage, gives access to the thick wooden door framed by two large iron rings. Two sommiers and a keystone top the summit of the door. The general appearance of the western part is very sober: on the ground floor, three blind openings with curved tops present a horizontal band at the level of the imposts. A cornice separates the ground floor from the first floor, pierced by three rectangular windows.
