Historique

History
In 1790, the town is promoted to capital of the department, thus giving the opportunity to build the buildings necessary to its role as chief town. However, they were insufficient to receive Napoleon I in splendour on his visit. The latter then signed at Bayonne, in 1808, a decree ordering the transfer of the prefectural hotel, offices and archives to the buildings and dependencies of the convent of Sainte-Claire. The plans and direction of the works were entrusted to the engineer Panay. The works extended from 1810 to 1819, under the successive direction of several architects (Panay, Rieutord, Le Boullenger, Arthaud). The building comprises a central building with two wings at right angles, delimiting a courtyard closed by railings. The rear façade overlooks the gardens. The wings were intended to house offices and the dependencies of the hotel. Access is via two Doric doors with entablature. The entrance of honour in the central body, where are situated the hotel with its reception rooms, the state apartments and those of the prefect, is constituted by a porch with four Ionic columns supporting a triangular pediment.
