Historique
Groupe de trois fontaines érigé en 1901 par les architectes Edouard Bauhain et Barbaud, avec le sculpteur Raoul Verlet, utilisant des fonds légués à la ville par Eugène Larrieu pour cette destination. Le square est inauguré le 15 mai 1902. Le marché, bâtiment de pierre et de poutrelles de fer, sert de toile de fond à la fontaine. Sur la face antérieure, deux tritons et un dauphin portent un énorme coquillage qu'escaladent deux enfants vendangeurs. Une nymphe surmonte le tout. Sur le côté, des pampres s'accrochent sur le rocher où s'appuie le coquillage. Une tortue et quelques escargots cheminent çà et là. Sur la face arrière, un mur formant quai, avec des anneaux d'amarrage est sculpté d'une tête barbue d'océan. Une barque flotte sur les vagues, chargée de barriques, de sacs et de balances. Une nymphe y est étendue. Sur chacune des extrémités du bâtiment sont adossées deux fontaines dont l'une est décorée d'une nymphe et d'un poisson remplissant un coquillage, et l'autre d'un coquillage, d'un triton terrassant un poisson volant. A cette ornementation sont ajoutés des pampres ainsi que deux mascarons surmontant chacune de ces fontaines, l'un en forme de coquille à face humaine, l'autre joufflu et soufflant.

History
Group of three fountains erected in 1901 by the architects Edouard Bauhain and Barbaud, with the sculptor Raoul Verlet, using funds bequeathed to the town by Eugène Larrieu for this purpose. The square was inaugurated on 15 May 1902. The market, a building of stone and iron beams, serves as a backdrop to the fountain. On the front face, two tritons and a dolphin bear an enormous shell which two children grape-pickers climb. A nymph surmounts the whole. On the side, vine branches cling to the rock on which the shell rests. A tortoise and a few snails make their way here and there. On the rear face, a wall forming a quay, with mooring rings is sculpted with a bearded head of ocean. A boat floats on the waves, laden with barrels, sacks and scales. A nymph lies there. On each of the extremities of the building are placed two fountains, one of which is decorated with a nymph and a fish filling a shell, and the other with a shell, a triton vanquishing a flying fish. To this ornamentation are added vine branches as well as two mask-heads surmounting each of these fountains, one in the form of a shell with human face, the other chubby and blowing.
