Historique
Confié à l'architecte Jacques d'Welles, le bâtiment, commencé en 1935, sera inauguré le 1er mai 1938. C'est un quadrilatère irrégulier divisé en deux trapèzes s'ouvrant sur cinq portes ouvragées sur le cours Aristide-Briand. L'axe commun est réservé à la circulation, tandis que deux escaliers avec ascenseurs desservent à chaque extrémité les deux parties. Les portes et rampes exécutées par Garlin ont été dessinées par l'architecte. Le décor est réalisé de 1938 à 1942 par des peintres et sculpteurs de l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, ainsi qu'un photographe, et célèbre Bordeaux et son port, les activités du terroir, les arts, le travail et la paix dans de grandes compositions peintes à fresque ou réalisées en photographies géantes. History
Entrusted to the architect Jacques d'Welles, the building, begun in 1935, was inaugurated on 1 May 1938. It is an irregular quadrilateral divided into two trapezoids opening onto five elaborate doors on the cours Aristide-Briand. The common axis is reserved for circulation, while two staircases with lifts serve at each end the two sections. The doors and railings executed by Garlin were drawn by the architect. The decoration was carried out from 1938 to 1942 by painters and sculptors of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, as well as a photographer, and celebrates Bordeaux and its port, the activities of the region, the arts, work and peace in large compositions painted in fresco or realized as giant photographs. Very homogeneous, the building has been little altered and one can still see woodwork, doors and original lighting fixtures.
