Historique

History
Although the present edifice dates from the 15th century, the foundation of the fief is earlier. In 1386, the Count of Périgord Archambaud attempted in vain to seize the castle. The Wars of Religion were a new period of struggle for the castle. The edifice must have been built after the Hundred Years War. The castle is enclosed in a polygonal enclosure comprising, on four of the faces, four projecting square towers to ensure flanking. One of them was built at the location of the old keep, and contains the dwelling body. The dwelling is prolonged, built against the curtain wall, as far as the gatehouse tower, with which it communicates. In the courtyard, adjoining the buildings of the dwelling were the stables and stores now disappeared. The curtains are crowned with machicolations. Arrow slits allowed firing under cover. A wall walk encircled the entire enclosure. The entrance gate is set in a square tower, defended by machicolations. Arrow slits protect its access. A guard room, situated on the first floor, commands the defence of which the entire system is preserved: lookout lodge, operation of the drawbridge, murder-hole, ammunition hoist.
