Historique

History
In the 12th century, the Templars came to establish themselves at Saint-Nexans and founded a commandery dependent on that of Condat-sur-Vézère. The chapel of the castle, today the parish church, was destroyed and burned several times. Upon the disappearance of the Templars, the commandery passed to the order of Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem. Built on a rectangular plan, the building comprises a nave and a choir. The choir is covered with a dome on pendentives with a circular base. Three formerets lighten the walls. The chevet is flat. Externally, the façade is formed by a bell tower wall extending beyond the rest of the building and presents a central portal framed by two smaller ones. The central portal is the only decorated one, with four voussoirs resting on pillars now lost. Sculptured capitals (confronted birds; animals; geometric motifs; figures; chimeric animals). The upper part of the bell tower was remade in the 17th century.
