Historique

History
Observatory created at the initiative and with the resources of Raphaël Bischoffsheim, son of a banker passionate about astronomy. He acquires the site at the summit of Mont-Gros in 1879 and asks architect Charles Garnier to design the architectural project whose works begin in 1881. The shelter of the large equatorial telescope is realised with the help of engineer Gustave Eiffel, builder of a cylindro-spherical dome in metal roof structure which, to allow rotation, rests in a circular tank filled with water. Complex inaugurated in 1887. In 1931, the observatory receives from the Carl Zeiss firm of Jena, as war reparations, two new equatorial instruments, a comet finder and a double astrograph. To house them, the Schaumasse dome and the building and dome of the astrograph are constructed by Nice architect Honoré Aubert. Scientific importance of the equipment.
