Kuvaus
Keravan vankila, alkuaan kasvatuslaitos, sijaitsee Keravanjoen viljelymaisemassa. Laitoksen monipuolista, monessa vaiheessa syntynyttä rakennusryhmää hallitsee päänäkymissä lehmuskujan päättävä, arkkitehtuuriltaan ilmeikäs kolmikerroksinen päärakennus 1880-luvulta.
Alusta pitäen laitosalueelle on antanut leiman lähipiirin huoliteltu ja hyvin hoidettu, osin puistomainen ympäristö, joka toimii välittävänä vyöhykkeenä rakennusryhmien ja laitoksen toimintaa alusta pitäen palvelleiden peltoaukeiden välissä.
Historia
Ensimmäinen, pojille tarkoitettu kasvatuslaitos avattiin 1891 silloisen Tuusulan kunnan alueella.
Arkkitehtuurisuunnittelusta huolehti Yleisten rakennusten ylihallitus.
Koivulan kasvatuslaitos muutettiin 1927 Keravan nuorisovankilaksi ja rakennuksiin tehtiin runsaasti muutoksia. Näkyvin ilmaus laitoksen muuttuneesta luonteesta oli päärakennuksen taakse 1930-luvun alussa valmistunut sellisiipi. Laitoksen uudempaa rakennuskantaa edustaa 1960-luvun nuoriso-osasto, joka sijaitsee hieman erillään päälaitoksesta.

Description
The phases of Keravan vankila, first as the country's first state reformatory and afterwards as a youth prison, reflect the historical development of public authority's care directed at young offenders. The varied and well-preserved building stock and the institutional landscape characterised by the surrounding open fields reinforce the institution's position as a key site in child welfare and prison activity.
Keravan vankila, originally a reformatory, is located in the cultivated landscape of Keravanjoki. The institution's diverse building group, formed in several stages, is dominated in the main views by the architecturally expressive three-storey main building from the 1880s, which terminates the lime tree avenue.
From the outset, the institutional area has been stamped by its well-tended and well-kept surroundings, partly park-like in character, which act as a mediating zone between the building groups and the open fields that have served the institution's activities from the outset.
History
Reform institutions began to be established in Finland after the Criminal Code of 1889 had provided for the placement of 7-14-year-olds in such institutions.
The first reform institution for boys was opened in 1891 in what was then the municipality of Tuusula. The building stock from the founding phase of this institution, named Koivula, of which the present main building forms part, was designed at the Yleisten rakennusten ylihallitus under the direction of architect Florentin Granholm and was built in 1888-1890.
The institution was considerably extended in the building phases at the end of the 1890s and in the early years of the 20th century, one of the reasons for which was to increase the number of places from 70 to 100. In these building phases a fairly large service building was added to the institution, which included, among others, a festival, prayer and dining hall, a singing and gymnastics hall, residential houses for the director and other staff, work and workshop spaces, and a cowshed (now the course centre). Architectural design was handled by the Yleisten rakennusten ylihallitus.
The Koivula reform institution was converted in 1927 into the Keravan nuorisovankila, and numerous alterations were made to the buildings. The most visible expression of the institution's changed character was the cell wing completed behind the main building in the early 1930s. The newer building stock of the institution is represented by the 1960s youth unit, which is situated slightly apart from the main institution.
