The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Niuvanniemi on Suomen toiseksi vanhin mielisairaalaksi suunniteltu sairaala.

Sairaalan maatilan keskus sijaitsee sairaalan tulotien varrella, noin puoli kilometriä sairaalapihasta. Sen asuinpihassa on tilanhoitajan, nykyisin taloudenhoitajan asuinrakennus. Samassa pihapiirissä on nykyisin toimistotiloina käytetty entinen tuparakennus. Tupaa vastapäätä on aittarivi vuodelta 1881. Pihapiirin ulkopuolella, rantaan viettävällä peltoaukealla on vanha tuulimylly.

Niuvanniemen sairaalan perustamisen alkuna voidaan pitää mielisairaanhoitoa ja hoitolaitosten rakentamista selvittäneen, hallituksen 1873 asettaman komitean esitystä kahden uuden mielisairaalan perustamisesta Tampereelle ja Kuopioon. Aiemmin toimintansa oli aloittanut Lapinlahden sairaala Helsingissä (1841). Keisari vahvisti esityksen Kuopioon perustettavasta mielisairaalasta valtiopäivillä 1877-1878. Paikaksi valittiin 1500-luvulta tunnettu Fagernäsin tila Kallaveden rannalla Kuopion kaupungin läheisyydessä.

Niuvanniemen rakentaminen alkoi 1881 ja se otettiin käyttöön 1885. Sairaala suunniteltiin Yleisten rakennusten ylihallituksessa, missä työstä vastasivat arkkitehdit Hampus Dahlström ja Georg Wilenius. Suunnitteluun osallistui lisäksi ylilääkäri C. A. Hård. Rakennuksia laajennettiin 1893. Sairaalan naispotilaille valmistui 1908 arkkitehti Magnus Schjerfbeckin suunnittelema rakennus. Sairaalan muutkin rakennukset perustuvat pääosin Yleisten rakennusten ylihallituksessa laadittuihin piirustuksiin.

Niuvanniemi is the second oldest hospital in Finland designed as a psychiatric hospital. The hospital's courtyards, the surrounding fields, meadows and shoreline are an integral part of the history of the hospital's patient care, and they still form an extensive and significant cultural landscape related to the hospital's economy.

Niuvanniemi lies on the shore of Kallavesi, surrounded by cultivated fields and forests. The hospital was built on the pavilion system, meaning that the wards were placed in several smaller units instead of one large building, forming a U-shaped courtyard. The patient wards with their walking yards line the courtyard, and the service buildings and administration building are on the central axis. The oldest buildings are in neo-Renaissance style. The chapel on the second floor of the administration building was converted into office space in the 1970s. To the east of the old institutional buildings is a therapy and sports building from 1985.

The hospital was originally almost entirely self-sufficient. The hospital farm centre is located along the hospital's access road, about half a kilometre from the hospital yard. In its residential yard is the residence of the farm manager, now the housekeeper's residence. In the same yard is a former tupa building, now used as office space. Opposite the tupa is a row of granary storehouses from 1881. Outside the yard, on a field sloping down to the shore, stands an old windmill.

The founding of Niuvanniemi Hospital can be traced to the proposal of a committee set up by the government in 1873 to investigate psychiatric care and the construction of institutions for it, which recommended two new psychiatric hospitals, in Tampere and Kuopio. Earlier, Lapinlahti hospital in Helsinki (1841) had begun operating. The Emperor confirmed the proposal for a psychiatric hospital to be established in Kuopio at the Diet of 1877-1878. The site chosen was the Fagernäs farm, known from the 16th century, on the shore of Kallavesi near the town of Kuopio.

Construction of Niuvanniemi began in 1881, and it was brought into use in 1885. The hospital was designed at the Yleisten rakennusten ylihallitus, where the work was carried out by architects Hampus Dahlström and Georg Wilenius. Chief physician C. A. Hård also took part in the design. The buildings were extended in 1893. A building for the female patients of the hospital was completed in 1908, designed by architect Magnus Schjerfbeck. The hospital's other buildings are based mainly on drawings prepared at the Yleisten rakennusten ylihallitus.

Medical considerations favoured locating the psychiatric hospital in the countryside, where more space could be arranged for patients. A stay in a peaceful setting and suitable outdoor work were considered to have a beneficial effect on the course of mental illness. Other considerations in choosing the site were good transport links and the possibility of farming: patients worked in the fields and in the garden. Architect Wilenius also designed the main building of the hospital's farm in 1881. In addition to farming, the workforce at Niuvanniemi included, among others, a carpenter, a blacksmith and laundry workers.

The number of forensic patients at Niuvanniemi gradually rose in the early decades of the 20th century, and in 1983 the hospital became the forensic psychiatry clinic of Kuopion yliopisto. The therapy and sports building, constructed to designs by the architectural practice Helander & Leiviskä, was completed for the hospital's 100th anniversary celebrations in 1985.
