The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Krematorio on rakennettu 1984.

Hautausmaahan sisältyy lisäksi vuosisadan alussa perustettu eriuskoisten hauta-alue, johon on haudattu kaupungin ortodoksista väestöä. Venäläisten sotilaiden hautapaikalle on 1912 pystytetty muistokappeli.

Sankaripuisto, entinen kaupunki- ja maaseurakunnan hautausmaa, sijaitsee Kuopion torin luoteispuolella. Alueella on vanhoja hautamuistomerkkejä sekä viime sodissa kaatuneiden sankarihauta-alue, jossa on kuvanveistäjä Essi Renvallin tekemä sankaripatsas.

Kaupunkiseurakunnan 1867 perustamaa hautausmaata kaupungin luoteispuolella on laajennettu useaan otteeseen 1900-luvun kuluessa.

Nykyistä puistoa rajaava penger on tehty 1920-luvulla. Puisto on saanut nimensä viime sotien sankarihautojen mukaan. Haavoittunut sotilas -sankaripatsaan teki Essi Renvall 1951.

Kuopio Iso hautausmaa and Sankaripuisto are nationally significant representatives of cemetery culture.

On the old side of the cemetery have survived numerous gravestones of persons who influenced the town's economic and cultural life as well as the provincial administration. Its oldest part is protected as a memorial area of old culture. The area also contains grave areas with memorials for both sides in the Civil War. The Puijo Chapel was built in 1957, its basic renovation and extension were completed in 1997. The crematorium was built in 1984.

The cemetery also includes a section for people of other faiths, established at the beginning of the century, where the town's Orthodox population has been buried. A memorial chapel was erected in 1912 on the burial site of Russian soldiers.

Sankaripuisto, the former cemetery of the town and rural parish, is located northwest of Kuopion tori (Kuopio Market Square). The area contains old gravestones as well as a heroes' grave area for those who fell in the recent wars, with a hero statue by sculptor Essi Renvall.

The cemetery northwest of the town, founded in 1867 by the town parish, has been extended several times during the 20th century. Since 1975, only graves returned to the parish have been transferred from the cemetery.

Iso hautausmaa was preceded by the joint town and rural parish cemetery, Hatsala cemetery, today's Sankaripuisto. Hatsala cemetery was founded in 1811 in the northwest corner of the grid-plan area and was in use until the 1860s. In the older town plan of 1787, the area named Multamäki was marked as a market square. The embankment bounding the present park was made in the 1920s. The park has taken its name from the heroes' graves of the recent wars. The Wounded Soldier hero statue was made by Essi Renvall in 1951.
