Kuvaus
Oulun konttorin toimitalo rakennettiin 1937-1938 kaupunkialueen laidalle SOK:n rakennusosaston Erkki Huttusen suunnitelmin.

Description
The SOK office and warehouse building in Oulu is a representative example of the office and warehouse buildings that the cooperative retail organisation built in various parts of the country in the 1930s. The building, designed by architect Erkki Huttunen at SOK's building department, is included in the selection of masterpieces of Finnish modern architecture approved by the international DOCOMOMO organisation.
The SOK central warehouse and office building in Oulu embodies the ideals of functionalism and the functional hierarchy of the building. The flat-roofed reinforced concrete frame building has a long storage section and a tall office section. Originally, the building was divided architecturally and functionally into parts. The basement and the three lowest floors contained storage spaces, the fourth floor housed an office and sales hall, and the fifth floor contained two flats, one of which was originally the local manager's flat, with access to the roof terrace above the storage section. The sixth floor consists of the sauna section and a terrace covering the residential floor. The reinforced concrete columns within the frame have made possible not only the long ribbon windows of the facades but also the sweeping canopy of the storage wing.
History
As the national cooperative's goods traffic grew, SOK set up branch offices in the busiest cooperative trading districts. These offices presented, stored and forwarded SOK's products to the member cooperative societies. The offices acted as regional "representations" of SOK. Some ten offices of this kind, designed by SOK's building department in the 1930s, are light-coloured functionalist buildings.
Architect Erkki Huttunen worked for SOK's building department from 1928 to 1941, and from 1939 as its head. He designed shops, office buildings and industrial premises in various parts of Finland, and he was a strong force in creating the streamlined, modern style of SOK's architecture that spread across the whole country.
Oulu had been the main base of SOK's Pohjois-Suomen district since 1908, and Oulun Osuuskauppa was one of the largest cooperative societies throughout the 20th century. The office building of the Oulu branch was built in 1937-1938 on the edge of the urban area, to designs by Erkki Huttunen of SOK's building department. Huttunen also designed the building's fixed furniture. The site of the central warehouse was chosen near the railway, so goods could be loaded from one side of the warehouse wing onto railway wagons and from the other side onto lorries.
The interior was altered in 1987-1988, when the originally open spaces on the second, third and fourth floors were divided by partition walls into smaller office and classroom spaces. SOK's activities in the building ended in 1988, when the district offices were closed. Since then the building has been used as commercial and office premises, including by the Pohjois-Suomen koulutuskeskus (Northern Finland Training Centre).
