The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Kotkan kirkko kuuluu suunnittelijansa arkkitehti Josef Stenbäckin runsaan kirkkotuotannon parhaimmistoon. Kirkkopuistoa ympäröivä historiallinen kaupunkikuva on muodostunut kaupungin perustamisesta lähtien.

Kotkan 1800-luvun saksalaisvaikutteista tiiligotiikkaa olevan päätytornillisen kirkon on suunnitellut kirkkosuunnittelijana erityisen tuottelias Josef Stenbäck. Kirkkosalia reunustaa holvien kimppupilareiden kannattama lehterikerros. Taidemaalari Pekka Halosen maalaama alttaritaulu Kuninkaitten kumarrus on vuodelta 1900. Kirkkosalin sisäväritys on palautettu alkuperäiseen asuun vuosien 1988-1998 välisenä aikana tehdyissä korjauksissa.

Svenska Samskolan suunniteli Th. Höijer 1898. Arkkitehdit Armas Laitinen ja Antero Pernaja suunnittelivat Kirkkopuiston laidan asuinkerrostalot 1927 ja 1938.

Kotka Church is among the finest works of its designer, architect Josef Stenbäck, who produced a large body of church architecture. The historical townscape surrounding Kirkkopuisto has taken shape since the founding of the town.

The gable-tower church of Kotka, a 19th-century brick Gothic building with German influences, was designed by Josef Stenbäck, who was particularly prolific as a church designer. The nave is bordered by a gallery level supported by clustered vault piers. The altarpiece Kuninkaitten kumarrus, painted by the painter Pekka Halonen, dates from 1900. The interior colour scheme of the nave was restored to its original appearance in repairs carried out between 1988-1998. The church's large baroque organ, which nearly reaches the vault, dates from 1998, and its model was the organ of Freiberg Cathedral from the early 18th century.

The church stands on a park-like plot, which also contains the heroes' grave area of the last wars. The architecturally significant buildings surrounding Kirkkopuisto form an urban framing for the church. Among them may be mentioned the former commercial college, which has also served as the Kymenlaakso maakuntamuseo, Kotka lyseo, the Ahlqvist house, the former Svenska Samskola, the fire station, one of Finland's first, and the Merikotka and Vuorela corner, which represents modern residential design.

The town of Kotka was founded in 1878 and originally belonged to the Kymi parish. The town parish was established in 1892, and the church designed by architect Josef Stenbäck was consecrated for use on Advent Sunday 1898. The Sankarihauta area was laid out on the basis of a general plan by architect Erik Bryggman, and the hero statue by sculptor Emil Filén was completed in 1951.

The former commercial school was built in 1911 according to the proposal of the architectural firm von Essen-Kallio-Ikäläinen, which won the architectural competition. The Lyseo was designed by the architectural firm Nyström-Petrelius-Penttilä in 1905, the fire station was completed in 1898, and the Ahlqvist house was completed in 1879. Svenska Samskolan was designed by Th. Höijer in 1898. Architects Armas Laitinen and Antero Pernaja designed the residential apartment blocks on the edge of Kirkkopuisto in 1927 and 1938.
