Kuvaus
Kotkan Pyhälle Nikolaokselle omistettu, 1801 valmistunut ortodoksinen kirkko on venäläisen uusklassismin huomattavin esimerkki Suomessa ja ainoa Ruotsinsalmen linnoituskaupungista säilynyt rakennus.
Laajan puistoalueen keskellä sijaitsevassa, pohjakaavaltaan latinalaisen ristin muotoisessa ortodoksisessa kirkossa on ikkunoilla varustettu keskikupoli. Pääsisäänkäynnin kohdalla on kellolle varattu torni. Oviaukkojen edessä on pylväspäädyt. Kirkon sisustus, taideteokset ja esineistö ovat erityisen merkittävät. Ikonostaasin 21 ikonin maalaukset on tehnyt Pietarin gobeliinitehtaan johtaja, professori Ivan Tupylev.
Kirkkoa ympäröivä korttelin kokoinen ns. Isopuisto on muodostunut 1800- ja 1900-luvun kuluessa. Puiston neliömäinen alue on Ruotsinsalmen linnoituskaupungin sotilasrakennusten ja siviilikaupungin leikkauskohdassa. Puiston luonteelle ovat ominaisia maaston loivat kalliomuodot, rannikolle tyypillinen puusto ja kevyesti polveilevat puistokäytävät.
Historia
Kotkan ortodoksinen kirkko valmistui Ruotsinsalmen linnoitusyhdyskunnan pääkirkoksi 1801.
Puisto sai lopullisen muotonsa Kotkan kaupungin ruutuasemakaavassa 1878.

Description
The Orthodox church in Kotka, dedicated to Pyhä Nikolaos, completed in 1801, is the most notable example of Russian neoclassicism in Finland and the only building surviving from the fortress town of Ruotsinsalmi.
The Orthodox church, set in a large park, has a Latin-cross ground plan and a central dome with windows. Above the main entrance is a tower reserved for a bell. In front of the doorways are porticoes. The church's interior, its artworks and its furnishings are especially significant. The paintings of the 21 icons of the iconostasis were made by Ivan Tupylev, director of the Pietari gobelin factory and professor.
The so-called Isopuisto, a park the size of a city block that surrounds the church, was formed during the 19th and 20th centuries. The square park area lies at the junction of the military buildings of the Ruotsinsalmi fortress town and the civilian town. The park is characterised by gently sloping rock formations, coastal-type trees and gently winding park paths.
History
The Orthodox church in Kotka was completed in 1801 as the main church of the Ruotsinsalmi fortress community. Its design and construction were carried out mainly by the naval authorities. The church's design was the responsibility of Admiralty architect Jakov Perrin. After his death, the completion of the church was overseen by architect Miller, who also drew the iconostasis.
The park surrounding the church developed gradually on rocky terrain. The park received its final form in the 1878 grid plan of the town of Kotka.
