Kuvaus
Katariinan (ent. Puistolan) pientaloalue, laaja ja yhtenäinen arkkitehti Birger Brunilan asemakaavan mukaan toteutettu asuinalue, on edustava ja korkeatasoisesti suunniteltu esimerkki teollisuuskaupungin työväestön asuntokysymyksen ratkaisemisesta 1900-luvun alussa.
Katariinan pientaloalueen katuverkko mukailee maaston muotoja.
Historia
1700-luvulla Kotkansaarella, jolla Katariinan asuinalue sijaitsee, oli osia Ruotsinsalmen linnoituksesta. Vuoden 1917 asemakaavassa alue oli Katariinan kansanpuistoa. Työväestölle tarkoitetun pientaloalueen rakentaminen aloitettiin 1920-luvulla, jolloin Kotkassa oli ankara asuntopula. Arkkitehti Birger Brunila laati Katariinan pienasuntoalueen asemakaavan 1922 ja rakennusjärjestyksessä korostettiin alueen kokonaisilmeen yhtenäisyyttä.

Description
The Katariina (formerly Puistola) detached housing area, an extensive and unified residential area carried out to the town plan of architect Birger Brunila, is a representative and high-quality example of how the housing question of the workers of an industrial town was solved at the beginning of the 20th century.
The street network of the Katariina detached housing area follows the shape of the terrain. Narrow lanes curve with the rocky terrain. The main street of the area is Tammikatu, which runs between two high hills and is lined with tree plantings. The unified detached house types of the area were created by master builders Armas Laitinen and Iivari and Pentti Penttilä. The two-storey rental houses form a distinct compact area of their own.
The town plan area borders a park-like managed seaside woodland, and to the east it is separated from the sea by the high Pookinmäki, on whose summit are the ruins of the tall beacon and signal tower that belonged to Ruotsinsalmi Fortress. Also located on Pookinmäki are the Kotka Merivartioasema and the former consul Gullichsen's villa built in 1898, which serves as the yacht club's pavilion.
History
In the 18th century, Kotkansaari, where the Katariina residential area is located, contained parts of Ruotsinsalmi Fortress. In the 1917 town plan the area was Katariina people's park. Construction of the detached housing area intended for workers began in the 1920s, when Kotka was suffering from a severe housing shortage. Architect Birger Brunila drew up the town plan for the Katariina small-housing area in 1922, and the building regulations emphasised the unity of the area's overall appearance.
