The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Aidat jatkavat rakennusten katujulkisivun paneeliaihetta.

Valtaosa tehtaan asuinalueen taloista on myöhemmin myyty yksityisomistukseen.

The Petkele residential area, designed by architect Alvar Aalto in the 1950s for the management and workers of the Summa paper mill, is a high-quality example of modern residential design. The area's town plan and the facades of its buildings have survived well in their original form.

The Petkele residential areas lie in a wooded setting beside the road leading to the Summa paper mill, on the slope of Petkelvuori, north-east of the actual factory area.

The workers' housing area, Puu-Petkele, consists of eighteen timber-framed two-family houses, placed close to the road line and linked to one another by fences. The fences continue the panelling motif of the street facades of the buildings. Puu-Petkele also includes a three-car garage.

West of Puu-Petkele are three residential buildings for paper mill clerical staff, villa-like, rendered white and enlivened with dark boarding. The garden groves of the villas merge naturally into the surrounding wooded park.

Enso-Gutzeit Oy built the Summa newsprint mill in 1953-1955 at Vehkalahti, in a place central to transport links, between the ports of Hamina and Kotka. It was the first major project in the timber industry after the Second World War. The majority of the houses in the mill's residential area were later sold into private ownership.
