Osa alueen rakennuskannasta tuhoutui jatkosodan pommituksissa.

Tiutinen residential area is an area built by workers on their own initiative on the outskirts of a factory, and its layout and building stock have been exceptionally well preserved.

The Tiutinen island community arose in the early 20th century as a residential area for the workers of the Halla sawmill and the Tiutinen box factory, as well as for fishermen and seamen. The area developed along narrow alleys into a dense, wooden, town-like community. In the middle of the island are the school buildings from 1913 and 1927, the workers' hall from 1907, and the old osuuskaupparakennus. The building stock is for the most part the result of self-directed design and construction. The Tiutinen residential area is characterised by its proximity to the sea and its lush nature. The island also has three redoubts that belonged to the Ruotsinsalmi fortress chain.

Tiutinen grew up in the early 20th century without planned design, mainly as a residential area for the workers of the Halla sawmill, founded in 1875, and the Tiutinen box factory. The first building plots were leased from the lands of Helilä village in 1902. A fire at the box factory in 1913 boosted construction, which was lively until the First World War broke out. In the 1930s Tiutinen was one of the most densely populated areas in Finland.

Part of the area's building stock was destroyed in the bombing raids of the Continuation War.
