Uudenkaupungin edustaja esitti rautatien jatkamista Porin radalta Uuteenkaupunkiin vuoden 1891 valtiopäivillä.

Rataa jatkettiin noin kilometrin verran keskustan eteläpuolella sijaitsevan rautatieaseman ohi satamaan saakka.

The Uusikaupunki–Turku line's terminus station in Uusikaupunki has, across a large area, a varied building stock from the 1920s, including water towers, goods warehouses and residential areas.

Uusikaupunki railway station is located on the slope of a pine-covered ridge in the eastern part of the town. The station building was designed by Thure Hellström and completed in 1924. Next to it are a goods storehouse and two residential barracks with outbuildings. The water tower and engine shed are located at the north-western end of the station, and the double guard house is at the south-eastern end.

A representative of Uusikaupunki proposed extending the railway from the Pori line to Uusikaupunki at the 1891 Diet. However, the Railway Committee held that the state could not build railways to three neighbouring and mutually competing ports (Rauma, Pori) at the same time while large parts of the country were still without “modern means of transport”. Uusikaupunki lost the rivalry, which, according to some estimates, would have given it a considerably more favourable connection than the Turku line that was later built. Efforts to obtain a connection to the Helsinki coastal line were begun in cooperation with the town of Naantali at the end of the same decade. The state was not interested in the project, and in 1899 Uusikaupunki, with assistance from Turku, decided to carry out a survey of the route on its own.

The Diet decided to build the Turku-Uusikaupunki line at the second session of the 1909 Diet, but because of the Russian Revolution and the events of 1918, construction did not begin until 1919. The line was inaugurated in 1925. It was extended by about one kilometre past the railway station, located south of the town centre, to the harbour.
