The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Sundholman kartano on yksi Suomen keskiaikaisista asuinkartanoista ja entisessä saaressa, salmen rannalla sijaitsevana, kuvastaa keskiajan rakentamistapaa puolustuksellisine näkökohtineen.

Kartano sijaitsee keskiaikaisen suojaisan vesireitin varrella niemellä, joka aikoinaan on ollut erotettuna vallihaudalla mantereesta. Vallihauta on edelleen nähtävissä puistossa. Kellarikerros on osa Flemingien mahdollisesti jo 1400-luvun lopulla rakennuttamaa asuinlinnaa. Asuinpiha on sivurakennusten reunustama. Kartanon ympärillä on vanha puisto, joka laajenee arvokkaaksi kulttuurimaisemaksi. Rakennuskantaan kuuluu lisäksi mm. kaksi viljamakasiinia. Sundholmassa on arkkitehtuuriltaan erittäin mielenkiintoinen, uusgoottilainen käymälärakennus.

Sundholm Manor is one of Finland's medieval residential manors and, being situated on the shore of a strait in what was formerly an island, reflects medieval building methods with their defensive considerations.

The manor stands on a promontory along a sheltered medieval waterway, which was once separated from the mainland by a moat. The moat can still be seen in the park. The present two-storey, gable-roofed main building was built on top of a medieval ground floor of masonry and extended in the 1770s and the early 19th century. The cellar storey is part of a residential castle built by the Flemings, possibly as early as the late 15th century. The residential courtyard is bordered by outbuildings. Around the manor is an old park, which extends into a valuable cultural landscape. The building stock also includes, among others, two grain storehouses. Sundholm also has a privy building of very interesting neo-Gothic architecture.

For the most part, the coast of Kalanni (Uudenkirkko) parish in the Middle Ages consisted of the island of Arvassalo, which was separated from the mainland by narrow straits and was largely granted as a fief to the Fleming family's Sundholm, that is, originally Vanhakartano manor. The first known owner of Vanhakartano, in the late 15th century, was Henrik Klaunpoika Fleming, who probably moved the manor to its present site on the promontory by the shore. The manor's residential courtyard was separated from the rest of the island by a moat, and the island was still surrounded by water in the 17th century. A wooden upper storey was built on the ground floor of the medieval stone building, and it was extended in the 1810s or 1820s.
