The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Rautatieliikenteen varaan kasvaneessa Kouvolassa on poikkeuksellisen komea kolmen veturitallin ja entisen pajan rakennussarja rautatien varikkoalueella Riihimäki-Vainikkala -radan (entinen Pietarin rata) eteläpuolella. Vuosilta 1887-1937 olevat punatiiliset rakennukset ovat edustava esimerkki rautatien liikennevälineiden huoltoon ja kunnostukseen tarkoitetusta rakennuskannasta.

Kouvolan aseman vanhasta rakennuskannasta merkittävin osa on nykyisin varikon puolella, sillä lähes kaikki vanhat rakennukset on purettu radan pohjoispuolelta.

In Kouvola, which grew up around railway traffic, there is an exceptionally fine group of buildings: three engine sheds and a former workshop in the depot area of the Riihimäki-Vainikkala line (former Pietarin rata), south of the line. The red-brick buildings dating from 1887-1937 are a representative example of the building stock intended for servicing and maintaining railway rolling stock.

The most significant part of the old building stock of Kouvola station is now on the depot side, as almost all the old buildings north of the line have been demolished.

Kouvola station was completed in 1887, and two years later, as the terminus of the Savo line then built, Kouvola became a busy junction station. Trains ran from there in all four directions after the line to Kotka was completed in 1890.

The first three-stall engine shed was completed before 1889, and it was extended with a ten-locomotive stall by 1905. In addition, an eight-stall shed was built next to it.

The station grew steadily: in the 1920s it rose to the highest class (class I), and there were two station buildings, 34 residential buildings and three engine sheds with a total of 25 locomotive places.
