The Finnish Heritage Agency's description

Oriveden kirkko kuuluu 1950-luvun lopulla uusia muotoja etsineen sotien jälkeisen kirkkoarkkitehtuurin merkkiteoksiin. Kirkko on erittäin edustava esimerkki yksilöllisestä ja ilmaisuvoimaisesta 1960-luvun arkkitehtuurisuuntauksesta.

Oriveden kirkko on torniton ja lievästi viistokatteinen. Kirkkosalin pohjamuotona on kahden vastakkaisen massiivisen seinäkaaren sisään sulkeutuva soikio. Pääovi on toisen kaaren keskikohdassa, josta avautuu näkymä vastakkaiselle alttariseinälle. Korkeiden kaarevien seinäpintojen muodostamassa kirkkosalissa on voimakas keskeiskirkon luonne, optinen keskitys molemmilta sivuilta valaistuun alttariin ja lyhyet näkyvyys- ja kuuluvuussäteet kaikkiin penkkeihin.

Kirkkotarhan ulkopuolella sijaitseva barokkitapuli vuodelta 1780 on rakennettu Matti Åkerblomin johdolla. Se edustaa tekijälleen luonteenomaista kaksikerroksista, kookkaalla sipulikupolilla varustettua lounais-suomalaista tapulityyppiä.

Alkuaan Kangasalan emäseurakuntaan kuulunut Orivesi erotettiin omaksi seurakunnakseen 1500-luvun puolivälissä. Matti Åkerblomin johdolla 1780-luvun alussa rakennettu puinen ristikirkko paloi tuhopolton seurauksena 1958.

Arkkitehtien Kaija ja Heikki Sirenin piirtämä kirkkorakennus perustuu joulukuussa 1958 ratkaistun kutsukilpailun voittaneeseen ehdotukseen "Kaarikirkko". Rakennustyö alkoi toukokuussa 1960 ja kirkko vihittiin käyttöön seuraavan vuoden elokuussa.

Koivupuisen abstraktin alttariveistoksen Golgatan kallio teki Kain Tapper, kirkon tekstiilit suunnitteli Dora Jung ja kynttilänjalat, kolehtihaavi- ja seppeletelineet Bertel Gardberg.

Orivesi Church belongs, from the end of the 1950s, to the landmark works of post-war church architecture that were seeking new forms. The church is a very representative example of the individual and expressive architectural trend of the 1960s.

Orivesi Church is towerless and has a slightly sloping roof. The floor plan of the nave is an oval enclosed between two opposing massive curved walls. The main door is at the centre of one of the curved walls, from which the view opens onto the altar wall opposite. The nave, formed by tall curved wall surfaces, has a strong central-plan church character, with optical focus on the altar, which is lit from both sides, and short lines of sight and sound to all pews.

The Baroque bell tower of 1780, located outside the churchyard, was built under the direction of Matti Åkerblom. It represents a two-storey, south-western Finnish bell tower type with a large onion dome, characteristic of its builder.

Originally part of the mother parish of Kangasala, Orivesi was separated as an independent parish in the mid-16th century. The wooden cruciform church built under the direction of Matti Åkerblom in the early 1780s burned down as a result of arson in 1958.

The church building, drawn by the architects Kaija and Heikki Siren, is based on the proposal "Kaarikirkko", which won the invited competition decided in December 1958. Construction began in May 1960, and the church was consecrated for use in August of the following year.

The abstract birchwood altar sculpture Golgatan kallio was made by Kain Tapper, the church textiles were designed by Dora Jung, and the candlesticks, collection bag and wreath stands were designed by Bertel Gardberg.
